Like a Fish out of Water
Every year, millions of salmon carry out one of the greatest animal migrations on earth. Using a running stitch on antique linen, I have traced the path of Salmon migration along a simplified map of Eastern Canada. The wild Atlantic salmon’s path is bold and energetic, contrasting with the pale, landlocked paths of farmed fish whose migration is guided via human intervention toward a single direction: the dinner plate.
Like a fish out of water was created in response to my participation in the Ground Rules, Artist in Residence program coordinated by the Cape Breton Centre for Craft.
The residency consisted of a week June 9 to the 14th, and was situated in Cheticamp in the Cape Breton Highlands National
Park. 14 Artists were selected to participate.
